Billions of people around the world think pop genius Michael Jackson is dead and set to be buried but nothing could be further from the truth.

Do you believe Michael Jackson faked his death?

… In fact, say sources in a position to know, the superstar faked his death to escape the crushing pressures of life in a fishbowl – and he is now socked away in an undisclosed location in Eastern Europe, possibly Hungary, far from the clamor of paparazzi covering his “autopsy” and “funeral” in southern California.

And in the strangest twist of all, say the insiders, once he’s rested and ready, Jackson, 50, will blow the lid off his own hoax – and embark on the most spectacularly lucrative concert tour in the history of rock ‘n’ roll.

“Michael is following in the footsteps of a man he greatly admired – another rock icon, Elvis Presley, who also faked his death and is still alive, and in hiding, today,” William Stern, who has written extensively on Presley, told me exclusively.

“Unlike Elvis, however, Michael is withdrawing from his celebrity before it destroys him. And he also is planning, once he has rested and regrouped, to stage a comeback unlike anything in rock history.

“Make no mistake, Jackson is a genius, both as a performer and as and showman and marketer and promoter. Remember when he made an offer to buy the remains of The Elephant Man from a British museum just to get the publicity?

“Remember when he reputedly was trying to find a way to live forever by spending hours in a hyperbaric chamber?

“If you look at his history, at some of the stunts he’s pulled to keep himself in the public eye, to maintain a sense of mystery about who he is and what he’s all about, the idea that he would fake his death makes sense.

“Let’s face it – Michael has been vilified by many in the press and by people who just don’t like him. He’s been accused of pedophilia. He’s been called ‘Wacko Jacko’ and a ‘Pop Weirdo’.

“Yes, he’s got billions of fans. Yes, he’s sold perhaps a billion records and CDs. But for all the love he gets, there are those who have been and continue to be unkind, and mean-spirited.

“I’ll make you a bet. If it takes six months, if it takes a year, if it takes two years, it doesn’t matter: When he’s rested and ready, and pulls the curtain up on his faked death, the world is going to stand still.

“With all due respect to the President of United States, Michael on a ‘Back from the Dead Tour’ will make Barack Obama look like a B-List celebrity.”

Stern’s sources say Jackson has been planning his escape for at least 16 months, but nobody, not even those who are closest to him, took him seriously, the expert said, “until now.”

“It’s unclear where he has gone – he mentioned South America, Canada, Russia, Kenya, Japan and Australia over the past year … all smokescreens, no doubt,” continued Stern.

“The best information I have suggests he is in Eastern Europe, in a medieval castle, possibly in Hungary. Right now, my sources are saying, ‘Leave him alone. Let him rest. Give him time.’

“They say that fans can help him recover by showing their love and respect for him. They say, ‘You better believe he is watching all the coverage.’ And they say fans can give Michael a boost by flashing peace signs to cameras – like he was famous for doing – and telling reporters they know he is alive.’”

But first, here’s a Bonus Feature for fans who think Michael Jackson has, in fact, died and passed over into Heaven. Psychic at Dick Kulpa’s IudexOnline says Elvis Presley welcomed MJ to Paradise (as depicted in this stirring sketch by Mr. Kulpa.

… just read Umar Lee’s blogsite http://umarlee.com/rise-and-fall-of-the-salafi-movement-complete/ & had an interesting lesson on one segment of Muslims in America & in particular the fate of many African-American Muslims who fell into a cult-like trap of so-called”Salafi” Islam, a form of Puritanical xenophobia, albeit with many reasons for its rise & fall.

My understanding of Islam in America & American / Immigrant Muslims dates from the early 1960’s era of Malcolm X (al-Hajj Malik al-Shabazz), various Black consciousness & Africanist cultural & political trends, along with a diverse spiritual movement of Sufi & “cross-over / all-is-one” unitarian types of movements, in addition to immigrant Muslim communities, as diverse as the American quasi-melting pot … same as it ever was … As a scholar, I have studied history in all its facets as applies to Islam as one of the Monotheistic (Abrahamic) tradition that characterizes post-Roman Western civilization, albeit with roots in the Tribal tales of Hebraic tribes & Egyptian Pharonic cults, and understand the interweavings among those traditions that characterize their common roots & ongoing borrowings & sharings, however much denied by each.

America is based on discourses of Faith & Religious practices, Spanish adventures & missionaries set the stage, followed by Jesuit Blackrobes throughout the French domain from Atlantic to Rockies, then Anglo-Saxon Puritans & a smattering of Germanic Protestants, all merging into the making of a genocidal ethnic cleansing of aboriginal American peoples, cultures 7 ways of life. More recently (1850’s) Irish then later still Italian Catholics brought their religious systems & institutions into Anglo-America, at first pariahs within a Calvisist WASP social hierarchy. While Jews were a secret subtext within Catholic New Spain, Marano / Morisco / Muhajar converts including a few former Muslims, they slowly appeared within a no less intolerant WASP world. Post 1960’s immigration policy opened the door to East Asians but subtly selected & privileged Christians from Buddhist / Confucian/ Taoist, whether Chinese or Korean .. but roots were there in 19th century appearance of Chinese railroad workers & other classes, not to mention the Punjabi Sikh labourors also with their own temples & traditions.

Within all these potentially mixing flows of immigrants little cross fertilization actually took place other than WASP institutionalism affecting all. Now is the time for more widespread barriers to break down as Buddhists & Sikhs find converts from amongst WASPs as fast as Born Again movements find converts from other ethnic traditions.

But ironically in a globalizing world order, more boundaries seem to be arising than falling.

What is to be done?

Interview: Author Fredrik Colting, a/k/a John David California, On His J.D. Salinger Sequel 60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye and Getting Sued

"In many ways I believe 60 Years Later is as original and creative as Catcher in the Rye."

Fredrik_Colting1.jpg

John David California, real name Fredrik Colting, is the Swedish author of 60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye. The book, which has been published in Sweden by Colting's own company Nicotext and in England by Windupbird, takes place six decades after the events of Catcher in the Rye, and features a nursing home fugitive Holden Caulfield, his drug addicted sister Phoebe, and an insecure J.D. Salinger trying to kill off his literary creations. Unsurprisingly, Salinger was not amused. Earlier this month, Salinger's legal team announced that the Catcher in the Rye author was suing Colting for "ripping off" the original, successfully delaying the American publication of 60 Years Later. We talked with Colting via e-mail about his current legal troubles, his goals for the book, and the elusive link between Catcher in the Rye and The Pornstar Name Book.

Why write 60 Years Later Coming Through the Rye? Why not just write an original novel, rather than one related to Catcher in the Rye?

I think 60 Years Later IS a super-original novel. In many ways I believe 60 is as original and creative as Catcher. I realize I'm putting myself on the line saying this, but it's really a modern day Frankenstein. On a good day when I think of Holden, I see him as a rebel - I admire him because he refused to sell-out. Other times I wonder what's so out of the ordinary about a spoiled 16-year old kid anyway? Holden acts like the entire world revolves around him. And, in a way, now Salinger is acting much the same. With that said, I still think Catcher is a great novel! I've never had much respect for old things, just for the sake that they are old. Especially if they act as brakes, keeping things from evolving. Creativity has to move freely or it will fall flat on its ass. If it was up to me I'd replace Mona Lisa with something new. Things change, we should embrace that and not try to desperately hold on to everything.

Previously, you've written books like The Pornstar Name Book: The Dirtiest Names on the Planet and The Macho Man's Drinkbook: Because Nude Girls and Alcohol Go Great Together. This work is a major departure for you.

I've written some humor books but just because you say something funny or goofy doesn't mean you can never be serious. The essence of 60 is to discover the results of when a writer creates a character, and the responsibilities he has to it after. It's this dance between these two dimensions, the HERE that we perceive as reality, and the THERE that we perceive as a made up world contained inside the covers of a book. With 60 Years Later I've taken on the task to seek out the real meaning of this reality, and the true relationship between Salinger and Holden. Holden has become just as real as Salinger himself. To anyone who hasn't met Salinger, and most of us haven't, he is simply a fictive character himself living in our minds.

Did Salinger's reaction surprise you?

Not trying to act like an innocent Swede here, but I really had no idea Salinger would sue us. I live in a small town in Sweden and I've never even known anyone who's gotten sued before! Frankly, I'm still having a hard time believing that, in this day and age, in a civilized world, someone can go to such lengths to try to ban a book. And what blows my mind is that I don't think Salinger has read the book. If he had I think he would understand the points I think I achieved with it.

fredrikcolting1.jpg
Why should a book like this come out against the original author's objections? Don't you stand to profit from what is, essentially, someone else's hard work?

I've put in very hard work creating 60, and I've given it my heart and soul. It's so very far from a rip-off, like Salinger's lawyers call it, and I think once readers get a chance to experience it, I'm sure most will agree.

It's not a money thing for me. I have another job, I have enough to eat and live fine as it is. This is about creating. I find it appalling that things that belong to everyone, things you can't own, are being vandalized by greedy authors that are hiding behind laws that were meant to boost creativity and creation, not hinder it.

Salinger is written into the book, in a pretty unfavorable light, attempting to kill off Holden Caulfield "in order to gain control over his own life." Writing a parody of Salinger's characters is one thing, but how do you defend the depiction of Salinger the man?

Even though I'm an unknown author people write bad things about me. That goes with the game and I'm sure Salinger has the wits to disregard anything I write about him. I have a lot of respect for Salinger, both as a person and as a writer. Obviously, I don't know him and like most other people, I've never met the guy. But he deserves respect just like everybody else. But I don't get to decide what people say about me or my books and I don't think Salinger should either.

Why write the book under the pen name John David California? There's the "J.D." reference, of course, but are you hiding behind the name at all?

Not at all. Writing is a lot about trying to find out who you are by pretending to be someone else, and sometimes you pretend so well that you, instead of finding yourself, find someone else. During the development of 60, this character called John David California appeared, and I came to like the guy. But if you want to be boring about it, I used a pen-name because I am also the publisher and it was a way to keep the two roles separate. I didn't tell anyone I was J.D. California because it was supposed to be a secret. As far as I understand it, that's the whole point with pseudonyms.

Anything else you want to say about the book and the controversy surrounding it?

Dreams and creations have to be able to roam freely, otherwise we wouldn't have popsicles nor would we have had people walking on the moon. That's the whole point of creativity, to think outside of the box, not to stick it inside a pre-measured mold and chop off anything that dares to stick outside. This is what moves things forward and my exploration will shed new light over two of the greatest characters in the history of US literature, Salinger and Holden.

Coming Through the Rye

via NYTimes, Artsbeat:

June 16, 2009, 9:04 am
J.D. SalingerAssociated Press J.D. Salinger, now 90 years old, is suing to stop the publication of “60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye.”

Updated | 9:20 a.m. An author who is being sued for a coming novel that J.D. Salinger says is “a rip-off pure and simple” of “The Catcher in the Rye” will argue that his book is a legally protected literary commentary on Mr. Salinger’s original novel.

According to a legal brief provided by his lawyers, Fredrik Colting, the author of the book “60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye,” says that his novel is not a sequel to “Catcher in the Rye,” but rather “a complex and undeniably transformative exposition about one of our nation’s most famous authors, J.D. Salinger, and his best known creation, Holden Caulfield.”

The book “explores the famously reclusive Salinger’s efforts to control both his own persona and the persona of the character he created,” according to the brief. “It also scrutinizes and criticizes the iconic stature of Salinger and his creation by comparing the precocious and self-satisfied 16-year-old Holden with a 76-year-old version of himself fraught with indecision and insecurity.”

Earlier this month, Mr. Salinger, 90, filed suit against Mr. Colting, a Swedish author who wrote “60 Years Later” under the pseudonym John David California. The book, published in Britain and scheduled for release in the United States, centers on a 76-year-old character called Mr. C, who wanders the streets of New York after he escapes his nursing home, in a manner similar to Holden Caulfield’s escape from an elite prep school. Opening arguments in the case are scheduled to begin Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

In their brief, Frankfurt Kurnit, the lawyers for Mr. Colting, say that his book is a literary commentary on “Catcher in the Rye,” Mr. Salinger and his Holden Caulfield character, and is a parody protected by fair use laws. They say Mr. Colting’s book “imagines the interaction between two narrator/protagonists: ‘Mr. Salinger,’ a bitter and angry reclusive author, and Mr. C, the fictional character he has created.”

In a written declaration filed with the brief, Mr. Colting writes, “I am not a pirate.” He adds that he did not write “60 Years Later” as a “cheap rip-off of one of the most famous works of modern fiction” but rather as “a critical exploration of such themes as the relationship between J.D. Salinger, the famously reclusive author, and Holden Caulfield, his brash and ageless fictional creation.”

Mr. Colting also writes in his declaration that Mr. Salinger has “exercised iron-clad control over his intellectual property, refusing to allow others to adapt any of his characters or stories in other media.”

He says that several scenes in “60 Years Later” comment on the uneasy relationship between his imagined version of Mr. Salinger and the Holden Caulfield character: “In order to regain control over his own life, which is drawing to a close, ‘Mr. Salinger’ tries repeatedly to kill off Mr. C by various means: a runaway truck; falling construction debris; a lunatic woman with a knife; suicide by drowning and suicide by pills.”

Mr. Colting acknowledges that three original characters from “Catcher in the Rye” appear in his novel: Mr. C, his sister Phoebe and Stradlater, Holden Caulfield’s prep school roommate. He also provides a list of more than two dozen original characters he has created for his novel, including Mary, Mr. C’s deceased wife, and Daniel, his son.

The legal filing also included a written declaration from Aaron Silverman, the owner of SCB Distributors, a California-based company that planned to release “60 Years Later” in the United States. In his declaration, Mr. Silverman included a mock-up of the book’s cover, which features a rough sketch of the Manhattan skyline, with disclaimers that read “A Fictional Examination of the Relationship Between J.D. Salinger and His Most Famous Character” and “This critical literary speculation has not been approved, licensed or endorsed by J.D. Salinger.”

In additional written declarations, Martha Woodmansee, a professor of English at Case Western Reserve University, writes that Mr. Colting’s novel is a work of “meta-commentary” and “is thus a complex work, more complex than” Mr. Salinger’s novel. Sara Nelson, the former editor of Publishers Weekly, writes that a US release of “Sixty Years Later” would not adversely affect sales of “Catcher in the Rye.” “Anticipated sales of ‘60 Years,’ a critical analysis by a little-known author, pale in comparison to ‘Catcher’’s success,” Ms. Nelson said in her declaration.
